In shamanic belief--the basis of many Native American faiths as well as native faiths around the globe--the priest or priestess, functions as a healer and intercessor between our world and the spirit world. The priest's spiritual journey is an ecstatic, perilous one the goal of which is to bring back the wisdom of the peoples' ancestors, as well as the wisdom of animal and nature deities.
