BASELITZ Royal Academy of the Arts, 2007 Hardcover, 260pp $50 You can purchase this book from me at the Australian auction site, Oztion: http://www.oztion.com.au/vshops/item.asp |
This extensively illustrated book - which reproduces all the major works
from Baselitz's distinguished career - explores his development,
revealing an artist whose concerns are derived from his experiences of
post-war German society. Essays deal with the philosophical
preoccupations of the period and place the artist in the context of late
twentieth century art. The book also examines why the artist paints
upside down and the importance of this to our understanding of his art.
This catalogue contains a rare, recent statement by Georg Baselitz about
his art and the context within which it is made. The catalogue has 260 pages featuring 250 illustrations and measures 31 x 24.5cms. |

THE CONFERENCE OF THE BIRDS Hardcover book in slipcase. $100 Image shows the slipcase You can purchase this book from me at the Australian auction site, Oztion: http://www.oztion.com.au/vshops/item.asp |
Written in the twelfth century by the Persian poet and mystic Farid ud-Din
Attar, The Conference of the Birds tells how the birds of the world have
gathered to search for a mythological king. Each of the birds represents
a different human type – a coward, a lover – and much of the poem
consists of stories told by their leader in answer to their objections
to the journey or their questions about it. The journey taken by the
birds is an allegory for the different stages on the Sufi path to
enlightenment and the soul’s search for unity with the Divine. For this
exquisite book, Farah K. Behbehani relates the tales of the ten birds
and their leader, illustrating the Arabic name of each bird in Jali
Diwani calligraphy. A line from the Arabic version of the poem that
captures each bird's essence is also illustrated and explained. About the Author Farah K. Behbehani was educated at Boston University and Central St. Martins College of Art and Design in London. She has studied with the renowned calligrapher Khaled al-Saai and recently won an award at the Sharjah Biennial of Calligraphy. She lives in England. ERIC FISCHL 1970-2007 by Arthur C. Danto et al. Hardcover $50 You can purchase this book from me at the Australian auction site, OzTion: http://www.oztion.com.au/vshops/item.asp |
Eric Fischl emerged in the 1980s as one of America's most important
figurative painters. His paintings, many of which show a single intense
moment, compel the viewer to participate in a world of middle-class
suburban ambiguity and drama. In Fischl's engaging distinctly American
canvases, narrative, morality, sexuality, and psychology are preeminent. This volume, an expanded edition of Eric Fischl 1970-2000, is the most comprehensive examination of this important contemporary painter. More than 250 works, selected in conjunction with the artist, present the full scope of Fischl's career: the formative work of the 1970s; the breakthrough paintings of the 1980s, including the controversial Sleepwalker and Bad Boy; and the mature work, often of a personal and contemplative nature, of the 1990s and 2000s. In his most recent paintings, Fischl has turned to multipiece cycles: The Bed, The Chair series, starting with The Philosopher's Chair; canvases inspired by trips to Italy and India; and the paintings—Fischl terms them "narrative fictions"—of the "Krefeld Project." These engrossing images have been accomplished with a mastery that has been compared to that of Caravaggio. The introduction, by philosopher and critic Arthur C. Danto, offers a perceptive study of Fischl's work over the course of four decades. Commentary drawn from interviews with the artist, conducted by noted writer Robert Enright, accompanies the paintings. Finally, a witty and personal afterword by Steve Martin, best known as a gifted comic actor and author, but also an astute collector of modern art, discusses Barbeque, a famed Fischl painting from his private collection. About the Author Arthur C. Danto is the Johnsonian Professor of Philosophy Emeritus at Columbia University and art critic for The Nation. He is the author of more than fifteen books, including Narration and Knowledge, The Transfiguration of the Commonplace, The Philosophical Disenfranchisement of Art, After the End of Art, The Abuse of Beauty, and most recently Unnatural Wonders: Essays from the Gap Between Art and Life. Robert Enright is the senior contributing editor to Border Crossings magazine and the University Research Chair in Art Criticism at the University of Guelph. He has published a collection of interviews with contemporary artists in Peregrinations and has contributed essays to museum catalogs and other publications. In 2005, he was made a Member of the Order of Canada. Steve Martin is the famed American actor and writer. He is the author of Picasso at the Lapin Agile and Other Places, the novellas Shopgirl and The Pleasure of My Company, and the memoir Born Standing Up: A Comic's Life. He is also a frequent contributor to The New Yorker. The engaging paintings of Joan Snyder have never been easily

MAX ERNST: A RETROSPECTIVE edited by Werner Spies & Sabine Rewald Hardcover $50 You can purchase this book from me at the Australian auction site, OzTion: http://www.oztion.com.au/vshops/item.asp |
Max Ernst (1891–1976) was a pivotal figure
in the history of twentieth-century art. A leader of the Dada movement
in Germany, he later joined the circle of writers and artists gathered
in Paris around André Breton, the unofficial founder of the Surrealist
movement. At the outset of World War II, Ernst fled Germany for the
United States, first going to New York and eventually settling in
Sedona, Arizona. Ernst returned to Europe in 1950 and continued to
explore Surrealist imagery and methods throughout his life. This important book accompanies the first retrospective exhibition of Ernst’s work held in the United States in thirty years. It examines his pioneering accomplishments in painting, collage, and sculpture and considers his use of the techniques of frottage, grattage, and decalcomania. Also featured are Ernst’s unique collage novels--narratives comprising disparate images culled from nineteenth-century engravings and combined in surreal, unsettling compositions. Leading scholars write on various aspects of Ernst’s life and art: Werner Spies on Ernst in America; Ludger Derenthal on Ernst and politics; Pepe Karmel on Ernst and contemporary art; Thomas Gaehtgens on Ernst and the old masters; and Robert Storr on the collage novels. # Hardcover: 319 pages # Publisher: Yale University Press (April 11 2005) # Language: English # ISBN-10: 0300107188 # ISBN-13: 978-0300107180 # Product Dimensions: 31.2 x 23.8 x 2.6 cm |

The Soulwork of Clay: A Hands-On Approach to
Spirituality by Marjory Zoet Bankson ISBN: 9781594732492 $35 More books about Contemporary Spirituality HERE |
A creative exploration of seven steps of
spiritual growth. Drawing on her first-hand experience of
working with clay, Bankson takes readers through the seven-step
process of making clay into a pot, drawing parallels at each stage
to the process of spiritual growth:
• Grounding: Connecting with our core
elements Because clay is such an elemental substance, Bankson proposes that it calls us to let go of our pretensions—“it’s just mud!”—and play as a little child. This simple connection with the earth, however, has the potential to put us “in touch with the whole of creation and, at the same time, our soul’s longing to participate as an artist, creating something new and unique.” Through reflective questions in each
chapter—along with a wealth of unique clay projects that even
beginners can do!—Bankson invites us on a journey of spiritual
discovery, a path of reconnecting with our body and spirit, and with
the earth itself. |
